The South and East Museums Federation was established in the 1930s as the South Midlands Museums Federation.

For many years the Federation ran training events and master classes by and for its members. However, with the advent of SHARE in the eastern region, an organisation which provides free training and other opportunities, it was decided to rethink the role of the Federation.

After a long consultation process in 2012, it was decided to rename the Federation to better reflect the geographical area it covers and it relaunched in 2013 with a new programme of events focusing on networking and case studies in the museums that our members represent.
